Avicii’s most acclaimed single, ‘Wake Me Up,’ surpasses 1 billion streams on Spotify

One of Avicii‘s most beloved chart-topping hits, “Wake Me Up,” featuring Aloe Blacc, has just surpassed the one billion streams mark on Spotify, Chart Data recently confirmed. “Wake Me Up” was released on Avicii’s 2013 debut album, True, but has only grown exceedingly more popular over time, especially after the electronic superstar producer’s tragic and untimely passing in 2018.

Regarded as Avicii’s top single of all time, the record has won many awards over the years that it’s rather hard to keep track — from Billboard Music Award’s Top Dance/Electronic Song and iHeartRadio Music Award’s Dance Song of the Year to the Teen Choice Award for Choice Electronic/Dance Song and Echo Award’s Song of the Year. These awards were all collected during 2014, the year following its release. 2014 was a pivotal year in dance music’s commercial mainstreaming, a global cultural movement for which Avicii helped to spearhead. Additionally, the track was last decade’s highest charting dance track.

Avicii has continued to leave his legacy stamped on dance music long after his death. From his posthumous album, TIM, to the Tim Bergling Foundation for suicide prevention, to countless tributes and his two Swedish Grammy wins, it’s quite evident that Avicii’s art and his soul will live on forever.
