Midweek Mantra Mix 058: Head into The Abyss with Abelation

Wednesday is humpday, which not only marks the halfway point between the work week and the coveted weekend, but also Conscious Electronic’Midweek Mantra Mix (M3). We’ve been scouring the web’s most enlightening bass music mixes that align with our vision, to provide “a conscious way to consume dance music.” M3 spotlights both veteran and up-and-coming bass music artists whose music seeks to raise the vibrations of their collective listener base.

One of the main goals of the Midweek Mantra Mix is to provide readers with a bit of peace and relaxation through pure, ambitious bass music. This seems more important than ever as the world winds down on a truly stressful, life-altering, and pivotal year. With everything raging on outside—the pandemic, the election, climate change—self-care becomes not just a social media trend, but a crucial aspect of living to place focus on. Today, we invite you to put all those stressors aside for a bit and experience some catharsis with Abelation.

For those who may not know, rising underground artist Abelation, or Reese Downs, may be fresh on the scene but has already made an incredible name for himself. Despite being one of the youngest bass musicians featured by CE, he’s already made waves and been on tours as part of Lost Dogz as well as with others including Eazybaked, Charlesthefirst, and Minnesota. In addition to his touring chops, he’s been featured on a number of heavy-hitting lineups such as Wakaan festival, Lightning in a Bottle, and Wobbleland.

Since releasing his debut album two years ago, he’s steadily produced a range of singles and mixes. His sound is unique and eccentric, falling somewhere between space bass and trap with hints of other genres occasionally sprinkled in. Downs makes music ideal for those early morning yet late-night sets, after the normality of daytime is long past but there’s still plenty of energy left to dance until dawn. His mixes are thrilling and unpredictable, taking listeners on a ride with him into the atmosphere.

In his “Into The Abyss Vol. 1” project, he relies heavily on his own ID’s and originals to carry the music, adding in an occasional remix of Eazybaked or Mr. Carmack. The 45 minute trip gets disgustingly crunchy (in the best way), dipping low enough to vibrate the foundation of a house at loud enough volumes. Packed with smooth, seamless transitions, alien-style dub, and the occasional vocal sample–like the hints of Childish Gambino’s “This Is America”– that all blends together into a final product demonstrating expertise seemingly beyond Abelation’s years. The scene may be awash with bass producers, but this one stands out from the rest.
