VEIL and NotLö come together on Wakaan for experimental two-track EP, ‘Exoplanet’
The artist formerly known as spacegeishA, VEIL, is no stranger to crafting left-field beats while carefully crafting an emotive storyline along the way. That is exactly what the Street Ritual owner has been doing with her recent output. As a new force on on Liquid Stranger’s esteemed imprint, Wakaan Records, the Philly-born West Coast bass artist has teamed up with bass music’s most promising rising talent, NotLö, for a two-track collaborative effort, titled Exoplanet.
It’s always an exciting treat when a long-time veteran and a hotly-rising newcomer join together on a project, especially when their styles mesh together like peanut butter and jelly. But as a past releaser on VEIL’s Street Ritual imprint, NotLö seems like an even more natural choice for this sort of hyphy release on a hyped-up label like Wakaan. Warm, ooey-gooey, and delicious, Exoplanet serves up layered bass frequencies that satisfy the tastebuds like a tasty afternoon snack.
The EP’s title track lays the groundwork with its multiple tempos, experimental tones and synths, and whomp-riddled drops that make you think, “yum.” The perfect encapsulation of experimental bass, the three-minute-and-forty-second tune is both chill and mellow, while staying hype and unpredictable. At the same time, both artist’s marks on the tracks are noticeable, yet in a way that melts into each other effortlessly.
As things begin to heat up on the second track, “Someday,” listeners remain in low-tempo land while being blasted into the cosmos with the song’s spaceship synths, hollowed-out tones, and outer worldly sound design. Here is where the whomps and wubs warm and coddle the listener all the way through to the end. Both weird and wonderful, and highly experimental, the only downside to the EP is that it isn’t longer. Don’t miss this amazingly balanced collaboration from the Wakaan Family.
