Canadian duo dope releases highly experimental bass bomb, ‘Mild Drugs’
If there ever were a production team that lives up to the phrase, “music is the drug,” it’s dope. Hailing from Nova Scotia, Halifax-based bass duo dope are one of the Canadian underground’s most promising exports. The pair have landed support from the likes of Craze and Dillon Francis, plus releases on SATURATE and Sleeveless Records. Now, as their momentum only continues to climb, they’re releasing a forward-thinking experimental track, titled “Mild Drugs.”
dope’s style is heavily influenced by hip-hop and bass music, which makes them right at home on FUXWITHIT, where their newest single “Mild Drugs’ is housed. Founded as a music blog in 2014, their “Champions Of The Underground” mantra is more than a tagline, it’s a commitment to pushing music forward. The launch of their new label has expanded that mission with an even greater focus.
Don’t let the title fool you, this one is anything but mild. The introduction is slow-burning and entrancing as the melody intensifies the trip. Mixing raw rap and film noir samples creates a sound palette that’s truly it’s own. The lead is hypnotic, the bass is engrossing, and the flow is masterful. Rugged and ruthless bass music never sounded so clean.
“The creation of this track started out very loosely, but really came together when we started sampling for vocal chops. One of our main goals with music is to give a natural high to listeners and this track is basically an allusion to this goal. We highlight this with the vocal chop ‘drugs to your eardrumʼ, which heavily encapsulates the metaphor our artistry as ‘dopeʼ represents.”
