Calvin Harris & Sam Smith are the perfect end-of-summer pairing on ‘Promises’
It’s not everyday that a Brit and Scotsman team up on — well — anything. But in the case of pop heavyweights Calvin Harris and Sam Smith, the manifestation is a powerful new crossover collaboration that will surely be a late-summer chart topper. And while the single isn’t Smith’s first foray into EDM territory, the Grammy winner revealed over four years ago that a collaboration with Harris would be “absolutely mental.”
The former Disclosure-collaborator surprised fans this week over Twitter when he revealed the track’s title, “Promises.” Sultry, steamy, and mellow in it’s production, the track’s crooning verse work was born out from the co-songwriting rendezvous between Smith, Harris, and Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 contributor, Jessie Reyez. The song’s sensual, late night lyrics are tempered by Smith’s smooth soulful tones and low-pitched alto range. Paired with a key-driven melody, upbeat snare kicks, and chill house sound design care of Harris, and “Promises” promises to be a provocative end-of-summer anthem.
