Midweek Mantra Mix 014: The Librarian brings the bass down south at Bassnectar’s NYE 360

Wednesday is humpday, which not only marks the halfway point between the work week and the coveted weekend, but also Conscious Electronic’Midweek Mantra Mix (M3). We’ve been scouring the web’s most enlightening bass music mixes that align with our vision, to provide “a conscious way to consume dance music.” M3 spotlights both veteran and up-and-coming bass music artists whose music seeks to raise the vibrations of their collective listener base.

Andrea Graham, known as The Librarian, is a Canadian DJ, producer, and indeed, librarian of music. Founder of Bass Coast Music Festival, she is known for her vast library of musical selections, ranging from dubstep to hip hop to favored UK styles like footwork, drum ‘n bass, and grime. Her performances have taken her across the world and a multitude of music festivals, and as her rise continues, she has made herself one of the leading female voices in bass music today.

the librarian andreaOn New Year’s Eve 2016, in Birmingham, Alabama, Bassnectar brought his signature sound and a host of impressive artists with him to ring in the new year in style. Gramatik, Joker, and the Librarian rounded out the lineup and attendees knew that they were going to be a part of something special. All three openers threw down heavy, impressive sets, but many bassheads were exposed to the deep sounds of the Librarian that night for the first time.

Packed with somber, heavy grooves and mystical instrumentation, this performance is emblematic of everything the Librarian is about. A host of styles, cultures, and influences are represented here, swirling in front of the lens of bass music. Deep cuts are in abundance, as she reaches back into the unheard portions of the musical shelves to pull out a host of excellent selections.

The fearlessness with which she easily shifts gears between styles and plays a multitude of underground artists at such a massive event is impressive. Her pure prowess behind the decks and an ear for excellent music of all genres are also worth noting. These qualities boost the meaning behind her music in a huge way and make her standout mix this week’s Midweek Mantra.
