Introducing kLL sMTH: Denver staple shares very first ‘kLL sMTH & cHLL?’ mix with two new IDs
Here at Conscious Electronic, we love all things bass — breakbeat, downtempo, left-field, experimental, dubstep in all its forms, you name it. As the underground bass movement has begun its full ascendancy in the US, we’ve been keeping a finger on the pulse of up-and-coming bass artists the country over. As such, CE’s Rising Bass Spotlight seeks to turn a focus onto those rising producers who’re developing their craft, garnering their audiences, and turning eyes, ears, heads, and bodies with their commitment to all things low end.
Denver-based producer/DJ, kLL sMTH, finds himself comfortably in the seedy roots of Colorado’s thriving underground bass. As the stage name of Kristoffer Edland, the off-kilter bass architect has gone from humble local opener to headliner in a mere matter of years. Edland may not be entirely to new to most bass music aficionados. He’s received support from everyone from Claude VonStroke to OPUIO, and many more. Plus, he’s one-third of Ultrasloth, his side project with Duffrey and Biolumigen.
Despite all this, we couldn’t help but include him in CE‘s Rising Bass Spotlight just because he’s released a brand new mix under his softer side-project, cHLL sMTH. Recently, kLL sMTH headed up an unofficial Tipper & Friend‘s after-party at NOLA’s The Republic, with one of his coveted cHLL sMTH sets. What fans left the evening with, besides jaws dropped and mellowed out spirits, was the yearning for more of the producer’s downtempo stamp.
Now fans can rest easy as kLL sMTH has shared his very first cHLL sMTH mix—the first of hopefully many, according to the artist’s SoundCloud page. Throughout the hour-long journey through downtempo textures and glitchy breakbeats, kLL sMTH is at his best with his most beguiling of compositions that he’s reserved specifically for his softer side.
Mostly composed of all-original kLL sMTH tracks, the most exciting aspect of the mix is that Edland has included two new IDs. He’s also included chilled-out tracks from his very own idols, from edIT and Telefon Tel Aviv to Tipper and Amon Tobin.
For those who’ve yet to witness a cHLL sMTH set, look no further than The Untz Festival. Attendees with get a double dose of kLL sMTH at bass-centric festival, taking place May 29-31 in Southern California. Edland will be playing a primetime slot under his kLL BILL project (his superduo with Mr. Bill) along with a soothing sunrise set as cHLL sMTH. Tickets are available right now.
