Flum and Toro Y Moi stand against a wall

Flume and Toro Y Moi’s highly-anticipated drum’n’bass collaboration has arrived [WATCH]

Flume has been coming full circle over the past year. With a 2019 that yielded a brand new mixtape, an EP with Reo Cragun, plenty of singles and collaborations, and some rather memorable festival appearances, the Australian megastar producer is hitting the ground running into 2020. After announcing his first-ever three-night Red Rocks run, Flume is now planning to unveil his yet-to-be-titled third studio album. It’s a project he tells Fader is “coming together expeditiously.”

“I usually take a while to write a record, but this time I’m like, ‘fuck it, I’m gonna do it really quickly.’ I’ve been putting my head down and working since the beginning of the year, really trying to write as much as possible,” says Flume in the exclusive interview.

To kick off the year in releases, Flume now uncovers his highly-anticipated drum-and-bass-tinged collaboration, “The Difference,” with American singer/songwriter Toro Y Moi, aka Chaz Bear, who will also be at his Flume & Friends event at Red Rocks. The brisk, bass-fueled, indie-leaning collaboration defies all conventional genre boundaries. Interestingly, the joint effort will also be featured in a new ad for Apple AirPods Pro.

“We made this song between a day at my place in LA and a day at Chaz’s spot in Oakland,” says Flume on his YouTube channel. ” This was our first time working together, I’ve been a Toro Y Moi fan for a while. His song ‘Talamak’ is a longtime favorite. I listened to that one a lot when I first started Flume as a project.”

Flume adds that “Talamak” was kind of the blue print for the song in a separate Beats 1 interview with Zane Lowe. The tune also arrives with a music video, directed by long-time Flume collaborator, Jonathan Zawada, who also designed the artwork for Skin. Flume told Fader they worked on the visual accompaniment tirelessly together: “We’re very much on a similar wavelength. He came up with the concept for the video and directed it. It was actually super tiring to film! I had to run back and forth so many times.”

“The Difference” is out now on Future Classic.
