Midweek Mantra Mix 057: Tsimba goes wonky on futureroots mixtape
Wednesday is humpday, which not only marks the halfway point between the work week and the coveted weekend, but also Conscious Electronic’s Midweek Mantra Mix (M3). We’ve been scouring the web’s most enlightening bass music mixes that align with our vision, to provide “a conscious way to consume dance music.” M3 spotlights both veteran and up-and-coming bass music artists whose music seeks to raise the vibrations of their collective listener base.
Tsimba, or Mark Evans Musto as he’s known offstage, has become a midtempo force to be reckoned with in recent years. The 28-year-old producer and DJ is leading a rising wave of bass artists across the nation, marking himself both as someone to watch and as an example for others to follow. Originally from Wallingford, CT and now based out of Brooklyn, New York, this dub aficionado curates some of the most high energy yet experimental music around.
His signature blend of hip hop, funk, glitch, and heavy bass are seamlessly blended together to create what he calls a “future roots sound.” Additionally, Musto’s mixes and tracks are smooth as butter, with a trained ear working towards pristine quality and layering. Notable performances include The Untz music festival, Equinox festival, and Mr. Bill‘s most recent tour, to name just a few. His first EP, Formless, was a collaboration with DeeZ that began to catch the eye of other producers, and his follow up works Dematérialiser EP and Shambles EP, which just premiered in 2020, have solidified his following further.

The FUTUREROOTS mix, premiered in the first half of 2020, dives into the best of tsimba’s bass. This one deserves to be heard on high quality subs, as it gets deep fairly quickly and stays there throughout the entire 54 minute journey. On top of a number of tsimba originals and remixes, it shows off collaborations with G-Space and Dirt Monkey among others. Rounding out those tracks are features by respected artists including Sully, Thelem, and Esseks. Tsimba isn’t afraid to push the envelope and play with different styles, leaning into trap and NYC inspired sounds for an original and fresh mix that can be played again and again.
