RL Grime reminds why he is the reigning king of spooky season on ‘Halloween IX’ mix

In a season where Halloween mixtapes are a dime-a-dozen across the dance music community, RL Grime‘s annual Halloween mixtape stands out on a shining hill. As the foremost Halloween mix of spooky season, the Sable Valley label head’s storied series reaches all the way back to 2012. His mixes are always relevant, always cutting-edge, and always a dastardly good time. For Halloween IX, which RL Grime originally announced back on October 1, things are no different.

From the beginning of the series, famous Goosebumps author RL Stein has always guest-starred on the mix—appropriate as it may seem. The last few years, however, have also seen humorous shout-outs from Guy Fieri (Halloween VII) and Shaq (Halloween VIII). For the highly-anticipated ninth installment, RL Grime taps T-Pain for another hilarious lead-in. As the hip-hop star freestyles an RL-tailored version of “Buy You A Drank,” all while trying to keep a straight face, The Twlight Zone‘s Jake Foushee comes in with the Intro:

There is a fifth dimension, beyond all that is known to man. It is a dimension as endless as space and as permanent as infinity. It is the valley between light and darkness, between fact and superstition, and it lies between the crux of man’s fears and the pinnacle of his knowledge. This is the dimension of pure imagination. An endless expanse in which we call, Halloween IX.”

RL Grime then takes the reigns for the next hour, leading listeners down a spooky, trap-filled path into bass music oblivion. Winding his way through tracks like Kumarion‘s “Want It,” Missy Elliot‘s “Getcha Freak On,” and a special RL Grime edit of The Weeknd‘s “Blinding Lights” vs. Metrik’s “Hackers,” RL Grime once again props himself up as as the premier sonic storyteller of Halloween.

Halloween IX also spotlights the usual suspects—from Shadient and DROELOE, to Juelz and Holly, and even sprinkles in a little BRONSON—making for an unrelenting mix that has the ability to switch things up with every twist and turn.

Even for those who feel as though they’ve outgrown RL Grime’s musical style, the producer never ceases to present the unduly reminder to his fans of why they loved him in the first place. Without fail, what RL Grime seems to prove year after year is just how of a master he is of the current musical trends and changing his style with the times.
