um.. pushes Zeds Dead & DNMO’s ‘We Could Be Kings’ into heavy metal territory
Following their recent Deadbeats-released Not Sick EP, rising bass duo um.. is continuing their release hot streak. This month, they’ve taken on a kingpin of song in Zeds Dead and DNMO‘s “We Could Be Kings.” The Tzar-assisted track is considered a melodic masterpiece out of the deeply diverse Zeds Dead vault and a crowd favorite at all of the Toronto-based tastemakers’ events. Turning the track on its head, um.. has taken the 2018 melodic banger into their decidedly darker, highly experimental territory. Perfectly fitting for a year like 2020, if you really think about it.
By adding in gritty, jarring synths, off-kilter beat works, and eerily echoing vocal manipulation, um.. goes into their usual chaotic direction that feels both excruciatingly energizing and unanimously chaotic at once. The real treats come on the drops, especially for the metal core fans, when the duo samples some heavy guitar riffs that dip into heavy metal territory. Still, there remains a sense of calm mastery throughout the chaos. The remix certainly makes a statement, at the very least.
