Seven Lions fully crosses over into trance: Melodic bass purveyor’s ‘1999’ remix EP steps back in time with new trance infusions of his most classic tracks
“Worlds Apart.” “Rush Over Me.” Days To Come.”
When anyone hears these classic Seven Lions dance floor anthems, they are usually overwhelmed by a rush of euphoria and transported back into 2012 when the then-newcomer and OWSLA-signee blasted onto the commercial EDM space like a tidal wave. Now Seven Lions fans will be struck with a deep sense of nostalgia as he releases his 1999 remix EP, containing new takes on his most defining ballads. Only this time, the Ophelia Records label owner has translated these melodic bass anthems for dance music fans of a different pallet—the trance lovers of the world.
Now, for those who’ve been following this visionary since his heyday, it’s nothing new to see Jeff Montalvo dabbling with trance. Anyone at his sets knows he loves the cross genres, often inviting trance opening acts on his tours and always infusing his immersive set experiences with plenty of progressive trance edits. Some may even remember when Seven Lions first unloaded the 2014 psytrance bomb “Lucy” onto his massive crowds at EDC Las Vegas, The Gorge, and more, which further showcased his versatility, range, and penchant for blurring genre barriers. Then of course there’s Montalvo’s psytrance side project, Abraxis, with Dimibo, which debuted in 2019 at Insomniac’s Dreamstate and established Seven Lions as a trance tastemaker.
Now Seven Lions has forayed into different corners of trance entirely on his newly-released 1999 EP. Seven Lions has never had a problem breaking rules and transcending musical boundaries to satisfy his creative vision, but 1999 works to spread his wings over the trance world. Spread across four tracks, the EP includes updated 2021 flips of “Worlds Apart,” one of his breakout major label tracks, the classic festival singalong “Rush Over Me,” a Seven Lions classic in “Days To Come,” and his trance crossover-collab on Anjunabeats with Jason Ross “Higher Love.”
