Liquid Stranger shares eight floor-rattling ‘Psychonaut’ remixes from Mersiv, 12th Planet, LUZCID, & more
Wakaan champion Liquid Stranger makes his glorious return to the release radar with a slew of new reworks. Celebrating the one-year anniversary since the release of his renowned ASCENSION EP, the renowned Swedish dubstep powerhouse is back with a blistering 9-track remix EP of the album track, “Psychonaut.” This time around, he’s enlisted remix duties from the likes of 12th Planet, AstroLizard, Blanke, Hydraulix, Krischvn, LICK, LUZCID, and Mersiv.
The 8-track Psychonaut (Remixes) EP immediately kicks off with the original track, featuring a bevy of bleeps and bloops, warbly basslines, and infectiously high-octane energy. The propelling rhythm eventually slows down, leaving the listener in a heady daze while audibly instilling a palpably raw sonic intensity. Near the end, a voice can be heard announcing the concept of a “psychonaut,” which further enhances the overall atmospherically cosmic ambiance of the tune.
12th Planet’s rendition takes the reins next and stylistically pivots by opting for a more hard-hitting tone. Dubstep at its absolute finest, this prime gem of a rework never slows down like its source material, providing instead a relentlessly no-holds-barred, neck-breaking beat from start-to-finish. His take on Liquid Stranger’s latest directly follows “Follow,” his collaborative release alongside UK vocalist Katie Sky from early November of last year.
Rife with all-out bass-in-your-face, AstroLizard effortlessly maintains much of the same ruthless energy set forth by 12th Planet. In a matter of three-and-a-half minutes, the enigmatic producer takes the listener on a rollercoaster of sound that boasts intoxicatingly discordant noises, a percussively driving rhythm, and unforgiving, hard dubstep production elements.
Blanke places the announcing “psychonaut” vocal cut at the beginning, setting an anticipatory tone for what’s to come. His interpretation of the tune takes its time to craft a rising tension before unleashing in full force nearly a minute in. In all, the propulsive beat stays consistent throughout, packing quite the sonic punch. The esteemed Australian talent’s “Psychonaut” remix follows his NYE-released rework of ShockOne’s “Follow Me.”
Next up, Wakaan mainstay Hydraulix’s larger-than-life rendition features a lengthy buildup and a steady flow of pure bass. Elongated soundscapes, sharp, stabbing synths, and an audible sense of urgency are sprinkled throughout, in turn producing a flawlessly-executed dubstep masterpiece. His remix follows the late October-released collaborative single “PULL UP” with Detroit-based talent G-Rex.
Back on the release radar, Krischvn returns with his rendition of Liquid Stranger’s “Psychonaut,” marking his second offering of 2021. From the beginning of the two-and-a-half minute rework, one can hear the fiercely uncompromising bass front-and-center. An entrancing tone lures the listener in with each passing second, leaving a want for even more from the established German creative force. His feature on the 9-track EP follows up his tune “Ketamine” with NXSTY from earlier in the year.
LICK is up next and makes sure to fully enthrall the listener with his ferociously unyielding endeavor. The tension is expertly-crafted and released alongside harsh, hefty bass. The emerging bass DJ/producer’s remix follows his hit “Infusion,” released last September as part of Excision’s newfound Subsidia Records.
LUZCID’s “Psychonaut” remix features a trip-hop tone alongside 8-bit-esque production, a perfect blend of unexpected sonic magic. The buildup evokes a tension that is maintained throughout its entirety, complemented perfectly by the lively dubstep flair. LUZCID’s rework serves as a follow-up to his late-October released remix of CloZee’s “Us” with The Kite String Tangle.
Mersiv’s take on the tune completely upends what its predecessors went for, instead infusing the track with plenty of bass house. The dubstep sensibilities are still left intact, released ever-so forcibly as the song progresses. Mersiv’s interpretation of ‘Psychonaut’ follows his hit single “Talkin Bout,” released at the tail end of this January.
Overall, the 9-track ‘Psychonaut’ remix EP is a quintessential dubstep rinser and features a wide range of talent in the genre that is worth looking out for as we move into the remainder of the new year and beyond.
