Introducing Motifv: The PL vibes are strong with this Colorado electro-hop newcomer’s 7-track concept album, ‘Dilated Mind’
Here at Conscious Electronic, we love all things bass — breakbeat, downtempo, left-field, experimental, dubstep in all its forms, you name it. As the underground bass movement has begun its full ascendancy in the US, we’ve been keeping a finger on the pulse of up-and-coming bass artists the country over. As such, CE’s Rising Bass Spotlight seeks to shine a light onto the rising producers who’re honing their craft, galvanizing their movements, and attuning eyes, ears, heads, and bodies into all things low end.
Who doesn’t love those sunny afternoon vibes while hammocking by the festival mainstage? For anyone else also getting extreme Pretty Lights vibes with this one, that’s because Colorado’s Joseph Kechter is Derek Vincent Smith’s little brother. As those following closely along in the Pretty Lights community know, Derek’s recent retirement was largely based on his decision to put his energy into uplifting his brother’s newly burgeoning career— which makes Motifv the perfect next artist spotlight in our Rising Bass series.
Flying under the artist moniker of Motifv, the talented electro-hop newcomer has dug deep within himself to muster up his newest artist concept album, Dilated Mind, which also comes in as his sophomore studio record.
Composed of seven all-original tracks, Motifv speaks to the creative inspiration behind the album: “I deeply feel this connection between the way our eye’s iris expands in the darkness and how our minds expand when we turn off the outside lights and look within. Dilated Mind is my concept album for this idea.” He continues,
“The album represents this mindset of openness and continual expansion – which is a way I strive to live my life and drive my creativity. Sonically, this project exceeds any of the work I’ve done so far. It’s a heartfelt collection of hip-hop and dusty sample collages that’s been laced up with bright, kush-kissed synthesis, which will leave you with a warm feeling inside.”– Motifv
Incorporating many different electronic elements and live instruments, including synthesizers, piano, classical strings, and DAW production, Dilated Mind presents its listeners with a full sonic spectrum of color. Ranging from chill-hop on “Share The Same Spotlight” and “Crooked Line,” to the soulful landscape of “Do Me Right,” to the complex and innovative layering on closing track “Moonlight,” the entire album is meant to emphasize Motifv’s profound hip-hop influence.
A true standout on Dilated Minds is LP opener “Get Back Home” with its use of swirling synths, deep glitch-hop drops, upbeat tempos, and those signature Pretty Lights howling vocal samples. It’s a perfect launching pad into the sonic journey ahead as Motifv embeds each and every layer with his personal experiences. Highly thematic and dripping with deeper meanings and motifs, Dilate Minds is a truly artistic statement into the artist’s authenticity, versatility, and range.
The LP also marks the first official release on Hawk’s Nest Music‘s new label, Featherweight Records. Under the direction of label founders Whit Hawkins and Araya Jackson, the two saw the musical visions of their friends wither away due to lack of resources or guidance and decided to found the imprint with that vision in mind. Operating under the ethos of “do dope shit with your friends,” and combining years of industry experience from the Hawk’s Nest team, the newly-launched label hopes to bridge the artistic vision of musicians with commercial success..
