Rising Bass Spotlight: Josh Teed makes his Gravitas debut with 7-track tribal EP and accompanying tour, ‘The Journey East’

Here at Conscious Electronic, we love all things bass — breakbeat, downtempo, left-field, experimental, dubstep in all its forms, you name it. As the underground bass movement has begun its full ascendancy in the US, we’ve been keeping a finger on the pulse of up-and-coming bass artists the country over. As such, CE’Rising Bass Spotlight seeks to shine a light onto the rising producers who’re honing their craft, galvanizing their movements, and attuning eyes, ears, heads, and bodies into all things low end.

The hard-working, violin-wielding, and ever-so-talented Josh Teed has been having an excellent 2021 for those with an ear to the thriving bass music underground. After making an appearance on Chmura’s Divergence EP via Wormhole, and contributing to Aspire Higher’s Summer Solstice Vol. 1 compilation, now the  Taiga Collective founder and Florida native has made the biggest move of his early career. Making his Gravitas debut, he’s newly released his seven-track concept album, titled The Journey East.

For those unfamiliar with Teed, it’s time to start paying attention. Josh Teed is a versatile, classically trained, and technical musician. He picked up the violin at the tender age of three years old, going on to win the Florida Fiddle Championship at age nine. Upon discovering electronic music, Teed began exploring his talents further and intertwining them with his newfound interest. His productions pay tribute to some of his electronic influences such as Charlesthefirst, CloZee, and Govinda while still remaining unique and properly showcasing his vast expertise in instrumentalism. Coming along as the perfect addition to CE‘s Rising Bass Artist spotlight series, Teed is one feature spot that is actually quite overdue.

We’ve been following the young savant since his debut album release in early 2020, through his unofficial remix of CloZee’s “Secret Place,” which earned him a nod from the tribal queen, and even got a chance to interview Teed when he launched his collective last summer, a nonprofit label centered around melodic and world bass music. Taiga Collective provides an avenue for talented, like minded musicians to release their music with all profits going to wildlife conservation. Although a lot has changed, Josh still keeps the same vision he started out with.

Josh Teed aims to push the envelope and break the seams between bass music and live instrumentation, blending the two effortlessly to take listeners on a tangible, palpable journey through an eclectic variety of soundscapes and grooves. With a fitting home on Gravitas, Teed’s tribal-led EP is an intricate look into his experimental collaborations between a multitude of other promising producers like himself.

From the tribal/hip-hop crossover anthem, “Crescent Bounce,” with Morillo and lyricist Brad Hester, to the vibey Delgira-assisted tune with DAGGZ, “Vibration,” all the way up to the closing number in “Alive” with Just John, The Journey East is not just a highly collaborative piece of work. Featuring Lil Fish, Bastion, Lowcation, Skysia, and more, the seven track extended player is a full-on sonic journey into eastern terrains, ethereal textures and vibrant tones, and undulating bass.

Calling the project “easily the biggest announcement of [his] music career,” Josh Teed says of The Journey East,

“This project is a celebration of collaboration in music, and was an absolutely amazing experience to put together over the last year. The album features tracks with some of my biggest musical inspirations, and some of my favorite artists! Beyond lucky to call these talented individuals homies, and honored to have them all In on this project.”

The EP also comes along with a multi-date album accompanying tour, which will weave its way up and down the East Coast and into Tennessee beginning July 9. Teed’s live sets incorporate violin, didgeridoo, and live analog synthesis overlaid on top of every element of a great DJ set, keeping listeners engaged and entranced for every second he has the stage. “Getting out on the road and sharing new music with people is my absolute favorite part of doing this, and I’m beyond ecstatic to come share this new album with y’all,” said Teed.
