Conscious Creators 012: Somatoast gets metaphysical on title track of his forthcoming Gravitas LP, ‘Creation is Creation’

Austin-based production talent Somatoast has long been among CE‘s favorite bass music creators. Traversing a multi-instrumental voyage through wacky circus dance music, jazzy nuances, and left-field squelches and wubs, Mark Rubin has sculpted his own signature blend of sophisticated dub and downtempo. Ruben’s most recent activity includes embarking on a new album journey, set to release later this month on Gravitas Recordings, with a whole new versatile set of originals as well as featured remixes from Kaya Project, Lapa, Edamame, and Skysia.

What is so easy to love about Somatoast is how his music isn’t just a collection of tunes strung together in an album. Quite the contrary, there’s always some deeper intellectual or philosophical meaning stringing his projects’ theme into an immersive quilt of sonic bliss. It’s a common motif that makes this eclectic, ever-evolving artist so naturally aligned with our mission, the “conscious consumption of dance music.”

That’s exactly what listeners can expect from Somatoast’s forthcoming Gravitas album, Creation is Creation, which Ruben himself calls “a musical mantra about the alchemy of creativity.” He elaborates,

“It is said the universe is always expanding from the initial force of the big bang. But how do we experience this expansion on a personal, human level? Creation is Creation postulates that it is this single force of expansion which drives all creation, creativity, evolution and growth— both physical and spiritual.”

As for “Creation is Creation,” the first taste of this deeply meaningful concept album, electricity melds with objects of nature on this deep, downtempo release. Somatoast explores chill, organ-led melodies alongside bedroom beats, otherworldly synths and samples, along with blissful notes and measures to puddle into. This title track is sure to deliver its listeners into a state of deep calm and self-reflexive meditation.
