XENOTYPE lands on LoFreq’s ‘Cypher Vol. 4’ with subdued experimental bass cut, ‘Malfunction’ [Premiere]
Armed with cutting-edge releases on Spicy Bois, Rapture Studios, Aspire Higher, Subciety, and more, XENOTYPE has been a rising act in the underground bass music scene for a few years now. The Atlanta-based producer, also known as Brandon Smith, has now landed himself on LoFreq for their fourth ‘Cypher’ artist compilation album. The budding bass music label, which was founded by West Coast bass producer Jalaya, has been carefully curating the best up-and-coming names in bass since the release of its first label compilation, Cypher Vol. 1.
Xenotype, which the artist is keen to remind his listeners of, means “any of two or more variations of the same material from two or more different species.” This is exactly what XENOTYPE’s music seeks to encompass in its experimental, genre-blending approach. “Malfunction,” which is the last track to arrive on Cypher Vol. 4, is the perfect example of the rising producer’s budding form and style.
With alien synths, outerwordly sampling, and an ominous atmosphere right at it’s outset, the track derives its intensity from slow, low moving wave forms all the way up to its first drop. Even then, the drops are subdued, wonky, and controlled. The entire track is expertly produced, showcasing the technical command that XENOTYPE possesses in the studio.
Released in full today, March 20, Cypher Vol. 4 has already been generating critical acclaim in the underground bass community with pre-releases from Volume Unit & BASSFACE, Jalaya and Flesh Interface, Allen Mock, and more. With additional contributions from Star Monster, Xotix, Kyral x Banko, BRAINWAVEZ, Dalfin, southgate., Smokestaxx, and a plenthora of other rising bass talents, the lengthy 22-track artist compilation has gritt and authenticity.
