Watch Childish Gambino’s music video for his new politically-charged song, “This Is America”

Donald Glover has had quite the weekend.

The actor, who has been riding the recent wave of success from his role as young Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, played host on Saturday Night Live and starred as the musical guest under his rap/R&B alter ego, Childish Gambino.

In addition, the artist released another new song off his forthcoming Childish Gambino LP — which he says will be his last — as well as a potent music video for “This is America.” The video holds back little as it draws clear visual associations to violence committed against the black community in America.

Gambino dances throughout the video, posing in Jim Crowe era stances, as the artist moves through brutal scenes juxtaposing terror and violence with chaos and sensation — specifically, in the murder of a black gospel choir, executions, cops, and men on horseback.

“This Is America” is a politically-charged avante garde piece by Hiro Murai, who has also directed several episodes of Gambino’s television show Atlanta, and features background vocals from Young Thug21 SavageQuavoRae Sremmurd’s Slim Jxmmi, BlocBoy JB, and a cameo appearance from SZA.
