deadmau5 goes b2b with himself as TESTPILOT on BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix
Legendary producer, DJ and mau5trap founder Joel Zimmerman is renowned through the world of electronic music. His music project deadmau5 has long been one of the driving forces in the scene. Also well-known his off-color Twitter rants and public feuds, it has always been his top-tier production skills and his state-of-the-art live shows that have kept deadmau5 at the top.
After many years producing strictly as deadmau5, Zimmerman unveiled his more techno-leaning project in 2017, calling it TESTPILOT. Zimmerman’s second alter ego made its original debut on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix series two years ago, so what better way to begin 2019 by bringing Testpilot back for another round. This time, deadmau5 and TESTPILOT are going back-to-back for the first time ever. Playing as two separate music projects simultaneously is a rare feat, and the results are impressive, to say the least.
The set begins with the usual deadmau5 house fare but doesn’t waste any time getting down and dirty with the kind of gritty handcrafted tech beats that TESTPILOT has become known for. Foot-stomping, dark, and minimalist is the name of the game for the middle of the set, but the mix ascends into melodic house again and closes out strong with the classic deadmau5 track “Strobe.” These two hours of music showcases exactly why Zimmerman is one of the best in the industry, especially in how he is able to approach music from multiple angles.
Zimmerman also recently released his legendary 2018 Electric Forest set as TESTPILOT, which fans can listen to here.
