Midweek Mantra Mix 012: Minnesota celebrates Bicycle Day

Wednesday is humpday, which not only marks the halfway point between the work week and the coveted weekend, but also Conscious Electronic’Midweek Mantra Mix (M3). We’ve been scouring the web’s most enlightening bass music mixes that align with our vision, to provide “a conscious way to consume dance music.” M3 spotlights both veteran and up-and-coming bass music artists whose music seeks to raise the vibrations of their collective listener base.

Christian Bauhofer, aka Minnesota, has been at it for a long time. Trying on a variety of styles and fusing everything from dubstep to hip hop to reggae, the versatile producer has had no shortage of success blending different styles over the years. From featuring rap group Zion I on his first EP to working with a host of bass producers on Wakaan, he’s a veteran of the industry and has woven an impressive discography together.

Experimentation has always been a theme of Minnesota’s work, which is why this week’s M3 selection is a mix that Minnesota created honoring April 19, Bicycle Day. On that day in 1943, Dr. Albert Hoffman intentionally ingested 250 micrograms of a compound that he had recently synthesized in his lab–lysergic acid diethylamide-25, commonly known as LSD. He then had an intense 2.5-mile bicycle ride home from the lab, and became the first person in the world to go on an LSD journey. He later extolled its potential for therapeutic use and spoke about its use as a consciousness-expanding tool. To honor his discovery, Bicycle Day was created, and to honor Bicycle Day, Minnesota created this mix.

Filled with originals, remixes and picks from talented artists and producers, this mix is as wild of a journey as Hoffman’s bike trip. Swerving from rap to dubstep, to drum and bass to freeform and back again, there’s no telling where it will land next. This is the first edition of the mix, published last year, and after its widely celebrated release, Minnesota released Bicycle Day Vol. 2 this year. Coming in at 58 minutes, there’s plenty of opportunities to find new favorites and get down to some classics.
