Artists and fans respond to Charlesthefirst’s untimely death, pay tribute to his memory

Yesterday, December 10, marked a difficult change for the experimental bass community. CharlesTheFirst, born Charles Elias Ingalls, tragically died in his sleep. He was only 25-years-old. According to a local news report from WZTV Nashville, Ingalls was found by a friend inside his hotel room near McGavock Pike in Nashville around 10:30 am. Moreover, cops found “no evidence of trauma to the body.” The death is currently considered unclassified by Nashville PD, pending an autopsy and toxicology testing by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Lab Group, a multimedia collective group Charles co-founded, took to Instagram to pay tribute to the fallen artist.

Ingalls was in town for a sold-out Lab Group show Saturday night at The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee, which was to take place this evening, December 11. The two-night run would’ve kicked off his highly-anticipated Winter tour. Needless to say, the music industry will never be the same. When the news broke yesterday afternoon, fans and artists took to their social media pages showing an outpouring of mixed emotions—from love and support to shellshock and awe.

CharlestheFirst’s impact on the dance music scene has been evident long before this tragedy struck. An undisputed CE favorite, the 25-year-old was consistently named as part of our Top Lists—from the Top Artists in Watch in 2019, Top Spiritually Attuned Electronic Artists, to Top Singles and Top Remixes of 2020. He was a standout on the newly-formed Kompass Music Group roster with its top-tier underground talent and a crowd favorite at top music festivals from Shambhala to Electric Forest, which he was slotted to make his debut Lab Group appearance in summer 2022.

From albums like The Ascent, SOLUS, No Dimmer, and his recently-released self-titled Lab Group debut alongside Kyle Bishoff (Supertask) and Robert Hunter (Potions), Ingalls memory will forever live on in and through his music.

Rest in power, Charles.
