West Coast bass maker Jalaya has been going heavy on his release game. Recently doling out a heavy BRAINWAVEZ remix, then teaming with Bassrush on “Knocked Up,” as well as releasing “Lift” on his own label’s upcoming Cypher Vol. 3 compilation, the LoFreq boss has been averaging one new release a week. Going 4-for-4 on the month, Jalaya now lands himself at Sleeveless Records for his forthcoming Disguise EP, a joint creative venture with fellow NorCal-native, Dark Velvet (real name Marcelo Montore).

To preview their upcoming Disguise EP release, the two underground bass virtuosos are sharing the project’s title track (by the same name). Premiering exclusively on Conscious Electronic today, February 11, “Disguise” enlists the hypnotic vocals of Isebelle Rose. Rose neatly describes the track as “fueled by shared emotions and similar experiences, brought to life through sound.” She continues,

“That’s why this project is so special to us. They pushed my own creative boundaries throughout this entire process and for that I am forever grateful.”

Speaking to how the track and larger project came together, Jalaya described how the creative process fell together so fluidly for the three collaborators:

“Disguise started as a channeled melody that I immediately gushed lyrics from my unexpressed shadow on a severed connection near-and-dear to my heart. I recorded a voice memo that I sent to Isabelle Rose right away that she absolutely brought to life with fluidly elegant melodic variation. Then we took to Marcelo’s studio where he unleashed his secret weapons with powerful analogue sound design to combine forces in a seem-less flow of collaborative ideas.”

Characterized by its emotive, expressive, and expansive landscape, the track’s haunting lyrics float smoothly above its dark, velvety production notes, heavily experimental tones, and some deep reverb that slices straight to the soul. In other words, “[i]t hits throughout the spectrum of emotions,” as Dark Velvet succinctly sums the tune’s immersive, embodied experience. If “Disguise” is any indication of what’s to come on the EP, out at the end of the month, then the project is sure to be a journey into low-end catatonic bliss.
