Update from Bassnectar Land: Easter Eggs Interview with Lorin Ashton
After spending the entire weekend on a deep dive with the creator of Bassnectar, I walked away with one of the most intense, raw, and revealing artist interviews I’ve ever personally experienced. This was more of a conversation than the standard, back-and-forth bore of the typical “industry standard” interview.
We covered everything—the noise, the beauty, and all the chaos in between. The piece was locked, loaded, and ready to go under the headline, “Bassnectar Opens Up.”
But then, just as I’m about to hit publish, my phone rings. It’s Lorin Ashton: “Duuuuude,” and keep in mind, this is me quoting from a phone conservation, “You’re never going to believe this,” the human behind the bass drop says. What followed was some of the craziest, most unexpected news yet!
Naturally, my first instinct was, “Okay, so do I go live with the interview?” But Lorin wants to sit tight on that for just a moment—to make sure his “dream-come-true” is manifested into reality before the world sees it. So, while I sit here waiting for the green light from this absolutely hysterical human being, we decided to run a quick Q&A to tide you over. After all, I promised the community something… and while I certainly don’t owe anyone anything, I am a man of my word. Trust me—you’ll want to stick around for what’s coming next.
But, for now, here’s a teaser. Sit back, and grab a cup of mushroom coffee, because this is only the beginning…
CE: What’s up Lorin! First off, how are you?
Lorin Ashton: Hello sir! Honestly, I’ve never been more happy, and I’ve also never been more bewildered. How are you?
CE: I’m actually super stoked to talk with you again, to be honest. I don’t know if you remember, but I interviewed you back in the day for Dancing Astronaut.
Lorin Ashton: Of course I remember you! I have enormous respect for all that you’ve done for the scene, and honestly, the fact that you reached out means the world to me. I haven’t done any “press” in what feels like 12,003 years so… I’m really looking forward to a deep dive with you BUT!!!!! I just got the most insanely gorgeous news, so I need a second to close my eyes and catch my breath (And before we finish, remind me to tell you why it means what it means to me…)
CE: Absolutely. Okay, before we get down into the weeds, I gotta say congratulations on the lawsuit dismissal… what are you feeling now that it’s over?
Lorin Ashton: Thanks, man. Our whole team is very happy to have all of that disappearing in the rearview mirror. But honestly, that’s all totally irrelevant to “my story” in reality. In reality:::: I have a lot to share, but I am legitimately BURSTING WITH SHOCK AND AWE after the most unexpected unicorn miracle just fell from the sky and landed with a soft, gentle bounce in the palm of my hand. I’m holding it here, I’m wondering if it’s really for real, and if it is then I will tell you about it the second I know for sure. It’s so far beyond a game changer…it’s like beyond a million shimmering game changers who were all born as identical twins and raised by a family who sent them to art school and taught them magical lessons like “how to be a good friend to others” and “how to be kind to others even if they are being mean to you” and then ALL ONE MILLION OF THESE IDENTICAL SHIMMERING TWIN GAMECHANGERS—literally learned how to moonwalk and then they choreographed a family dance routine across the sky to raise money for the poor. It’s like THAT…..if it’s real… I’ll let you know more tomorrow when I confirm I’m not dreaming, ok?
CE: Wait a second!!! we have that whole deep dive interview we did over the weekend called “Bassnectar Opens Up” – so you now want me to hold off on that?!
Lorin Ashton: Yeah man. Trust, if this dream is real then it’s just the most ridiculous dream come true and it changes everything. I just want to go to sleep and wake up and pinch myself before I let it rip… might be a few daze, I don’t know, I don’t care…I’m not trying to predict the future here, I am just utterly beside myself with gratitude and hope.
CE: Ok! This all sounds so unbelievably beautiful, Lorin. I haven’t heard you this happy and excited in a long time. Oh yeah, you said to remind you to explain “why it means what it means.”
Lorin Ashton: Ha ha! I legitimately can’t wait to tell you… just let me make sure this good news is completely rock solid. Love you bud.
CE: Before we sign off, can we at least give the people a glimpse into what you’ve been working up in the lab?
Lorin Ashton: Yeah man… Artistically, I have been editing video in Ableton, which is an entire universe of creative possibilities, and working on the next album which is coming out in a few weeks. “Relive Forever” is my first actual live album, featuring so many custom cut flips of all original music, recorded live with a zillion mics, and the crowd and the energy is just off the hook. It’s like some “Seasons In The Abyss” live Slayer album from back in the early nineties…it’s just raw, and heavy, and bursting with life. Kinda like me☺️
