ZHU is one producer who needs no introduction on this site. The chart-shattering visionary most recently conducted a breathtaking set atop the Japanese Alps that is still turning heads. ZHU now calls up Tinashe, a multi-Platinum-certified R&B disruptor, singer, writer and dancer, on their haunting new collaborative single, “Only,” released under the Astralwerks umbrella. Tinashe also produces, mixes, engineers, creative directs, and edits, so the pairing is a match made in heaven.
Written and produced by both artists, the searing interplay between the two distinctive vocalists fuels a song that spans the spectrum from loneliness to connection, quiet to frenzy, darkness to light. The tune also comes with an impressive music video directed by Jack Murgatroyd, who has worked with Coldplay, Flume, and ODESZA and also helmed the music video for ZHU’s “Came For The Low.” Set against the backdrop of the global lockdown, the official music video explores the connection between isolation and voyeurism, as viewers look in on ZHU and Tinashe, each alone in a downtown loft.
“The video nods to the current moment, that ubiquitous feeling of uncertainty and uneasiness,” Director Jack Murgatroyd says. “This was our creative approach to exploring those emotions, our abstract way of trying to tap into our feelings of isolation and redundancy.”
