G-Rex & Sully team on shuttering bass cut in second Wakaan pairing, ‘Back It Up’
Two years after their inaugural 2019 collaboration “Clique,” Wakaan favorites G-Rex and Sully are adding double dose of left-field to their combined discography with “Back It Up.” The track follows two separate releases for the young Wakaan bucks, with G-Rex teaming up with Champagne Drip back in May 2020 on “Cold Case” and an even more recent Wakaan EP for Sully, titled Malfuction.
Hazy vocals guide the build up towards a cinematic, daunting drop full of dominant basslines and commanding frequencies. The second drop decelerates while adding additional layers of penetrating alien lasers. “Back It Up” serves as a preview of the duo’s collaborative EP, set for release later this fall.
Be sure to catch G-Rex and Sully live this fall in select cities as support for PEEKABOO’s Black Hole Tour, with Sully also making a 3-date November run for Champagne Drip’s announced Champagne Trip tour. Stream “Back It Up” now, out via Wakaan.
G-Rex & Sully – Back It Up (WAK172)
Although the origins of G-REX can be dated back to 2015, 2018 was certainly a breakout year for Detroit native producer, Jake Sweeney. As he worked to perfect his brand of high energy trap and bass fused with sinister dubstep sound design, he honed in on a deep dark sound that has become a recognizable signature in his music and earned him the respect and support of leaders in the scene.
In September 2018, G-REX released one of the biggest bass music tracks of the year, “Babatunde,” as a collaboration with friend and fellow bass music phenom, PEEKABOO, on Liquid Stranger’s record label, Wakaan. He then followed up with his debut four track RIFT EP, also on the label, as well a recent high-powered collaboration with Ghastly.
2019 saw G-REX’s first major tour appearance as support on Liquid Stranger’s 36-date INFINITY TOUR, the release of his second EP, and a handful of singles including official remixes and collaborations with major players in the bass music scene. Along the way, G-REX has continually shown he is here to usher in a new era of cold-blooded bass.
“Sully” is the brainchild of Detroit based producer, Christopher Sullivant. After refining his skills from the highly acclaimed Icon Collective in 2018, Sully broke into the electronic music scene in March of 2019.
After a series of prolific self releases in 2019, Sully kicked off his touring history on Luzcid and Champagne Drip’s “DoubleVision” tour. Sully would then join the Wakaan label boss, Liquid Stranger, along his 2020 Ascension Tour, solidifying the newcomer into the weird and wonderful world of Wakaan.
Using melodic soundscapes, guttural sound design, and woven textures, Sully proves time and time again that he is a force-to-be-reckoned-with in the ballooning underground bass music community.
