Celebrate a decade of Flume’s debut album with long-lost demo, ‘Slugger 1.4’

Flume is full of surprises. Just months after releasing his third studio album, Palaces, the Aussie juggernaut (known to close friends as Harley Streten) has unearthed a long-lost demo cut, titled “Slugger 1.4.” The surprise drop is part of a milestone tenth-anniversary nod back to his seminal debut album, Flume, originally released in 2012.

As Streten first revealed on his TikTok account, he thought he’d lost the original laptop used to create Flume until he located the device just days before the self-titled masterpiece turned ten. Flume was somehow able to refashion the old computer and restore its data. Contained within was a wealth of never finished, never-before-heard productions, including a demo titled “Slugger.”

Originally intended to be on his debut album tracklist, Flume explains it best as to why he decided to share the track now:

“Made this one in Paris, always loved this demo, but it never quite made it onto an album,” says Flume. “I figured now that it’s 10 years since my first album was released it would be a good time to share.”

The new song, titled “Slugger 1.4 [2014 Export.WAV],” feels like stepping back into the early 2010s “EDM boom.” This was the time when Harley Streten was stepping away from What So Not to pursue his solo career as Flume. The track is Flume doing what he does best.

Friday, November 11, sees Flume embark on his first Australian tour since the pandemic with stops in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and more. Channel Tres, Toro Y Moi, MAYA-A, and Vera Blu are confirmed to join. In the meantime, enjoy the nostalgic 4-minute cut below, along with the TikTok video explaining how he uncovered the archival demo.
