Bassnectar returns to Facebook for another live fan AMA: Here’s what we learned
A little over two weeks remain until Bassnectar makes his Grand Rapids, Michigan return. The bass music mastermind has been busy in the labs prepping his three-night curated event, Day Of The Dead: Dark Party. Between getting busy on the tracks and completely ditching his cell phone for Lent, Bassnectar made time for another live, impromptu, AMA-style Q&A to tune in online with his fans.
He’s already stopped by his beloved Facebook group once this year, on the brink of his inaugural Deja Voom, to dish on a number of details. Anytime Lorin Ashton stops into the interwebs, fans immediately tune out of reality, knowing exactly what to ask in the world of Bassnectar, especially since the answers are coming straight from the source’s typing fingers.
From what songs will likely be heard at his upcoming NYE 360 celebration, to an update on his in-the-works Reflective 5 EP, to his politics and just a simple day in the life of Lorin Ashton, here’s what the King of Sound had to say in his most recent live fan AMA.
1) “Basshead” will likely make its return at 360.
Here’s a track that hasn’t been played out since Coachella when Bassnectar mashed the track with Eminem and Jay-Z a cappellas. The track first appeared at Okeechobee 2018, when Bassnectar opened his headlining set with a mash-up of Eminem’s “Hi My Name Is” against his very own “Basshead.” The crowd went virally nuts and the moment itself went viral as well.
Don’t be surprised to hear “Paging Stereophonic,” “Plugged In,” and “Weed Wid Da Macka” in Louisville.
Is Lorin also hinting at a “Russian Lullaby” and “Falling” mash-up at 360? Only time will tell…
2) Fans can expect a hefty “Seek & Destroy” remix at DOTD.
How appropriate considering Bassnectar’s last time playing the Metallica remix was at his Halloween 2016 run when he turned the Grand Rapids crowd on their heads.
Fans should prepare for a big fat “HEXES,” which has probably been the top fan-requested song for the three-night Halloween run.
Oh, and “Baracka’s Theme.”
Also, Hulaween may just be getting Bassnectar’s take on “Griztronics,” the already seismic collab between GRiZ and Subtronics.
But “Voodoo” is most certainly getting played at Voodoo Fest.
3) For the DTOD sets, fans can expect TONS of “remixed throwbacks” from the Bassnectar vault…
…along with “some highlights from everything since” all “dressed up in drag and READY TO RUMBLE.”
4) Fans shouldn’t expect a release date for Reflective Pt. 5 EP any time soon…
But here’s what will be on the fifth (and previously mentioned final) extended-play project.
Ashton’s label, Amorphous Music, keeps inquiring about when the EP will be finished, but he’s been too busy pouring himself into his upcoming DOTD run to give the EP the fine-tuning it deserves. Ashton originally said he was shooting for a summertime release.
5) Also don’t expect to see a full-length LP coming any time soon.
He’s having fun doing his thing with the Reflective series, which again keeps getting delayed because of DOTD.
6) Here’s an update on his collaboration with Moody Good.
7) Ashton really doesn’t have a Democratic candidate he’s gunning for in the 2020 presidential election.
He just finds them all to be fifty different shades of lame.
He was initially “feeling the Bern” again, but feels Bernie is getting too old. Ashton even calls Beto “to spacey” (which is totally true).
8) Bassnectar calls his hair a “face curtain”… and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
In fact, Ashton says he enjoys have a “mop of hair to hide behind.” We like to think of his beautiful locks as more of a lamp shade than a “face curtain.” The light tends to draw the moths, after all.
9) He basically calls out the rail riders for being stiff and heavy.
Don’t worry, Lorin, the big kids in back know how to wiggle, bob, weave, and “grind thy pelvis.”
Every time he’s asked about that “Verbing The Noun” tease, he finds a way to not fully answer the question… or request… or nudge…
10) He likes to set Pandora to random ambient and left-field stations for inspiration.
11) He’s got something cooking up for a special performance at Okeechobee.
Sounds like it’ll be something similar to his full moon set from 2018, but nothing sounds set in stone.
