Tycho and rum.gold impress with new soulful single, ‘Run Away’

Two-time Grammy-nominated producer Tycho (Scott Hansen) has been a remixing machine of sorts lately. Since releasing his SIMULCAST instrumental add-on package to his acclaimed WEATHER LP, Hansen has parceled out an enchanting “Ghost of Kodoku” remix for the Ghost Of Tsushima gaming soundtrack and a soothing rendition of The Knocks and Muna’s “Bodies.” In the same spirit of releasing mesmerizing one-offs, Tycho now taps R&B singer rum.gold on a soulful, lyrically-driven tune called “Run Away.”

“With ‘Run Away,’ I wanted to take new musical ideas and wrap them in the familiar sonics and textures of my sound,” says Tycho says on working with the R&B artist. “Working with rum.gold’s voice was really freeing in that it provided the contrast needed to push things into a different emotional space.”

The track, which is out now on Mom + Pop Music and Ninja Tune, also comes with an acoustic b-side that strips back the electronic elements entirely. All that’s left is an empty canvas which Tycho’s soft piano chords and rum.gold’s warm vocals fill the space. “‘Run Away’ was fun to write,” says rum.gold, “not only because this isn’t my usual style of writing but also because I got to play a different character other than myself. It’s a very selfish track while also being apologetic and reflective at the same time.”

The Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter’s soft vocals and meaningful lyricism provides the perfect tonalities to match Tycho’s signature electronic production. Marked by crisp atmospheres, mellow yet upbeat percussion, ambient textures, and a downtempo allure, “Run Away” is intentional, boundary-pushing, and unapologetic. Stream the double release below.
