Rootkit showcases his diversity as a musician with house-leaning single, ‘Dreaming’
Making his debut on bitbird earlier this year with four new singles, including “Too Close” and “Sparks,” Rootkit returns to the San Holo-led imprint with one final single before the release of his debut album. Like all 2020 singles have done so far, Rootkit’s new track, “Dreaming,” showcases a new musical side of the Norwegian producer.
Inspired by the underground house and techno he was listening to a lot at the time the song was created, “Dreaming” is a mix of Rootkit’s signature style and these dreamy, abstract house and techno influences. On the production of the track, Rootkit shares: “There is a lot of distortion in this track. I like to use distortion as a creative tool to sculpt the sound and make for example the drums much more punchy and rough sounding. My mixing often results in a lot of sound design as opposed to just making sure everything sounds clean and fits together. I think it can result in a much more cohesive and unique sound.”
When writing the lyrics, singer/songwriter and Adventure Club collaborator Cammie Robinson immediately picked up on the dreamy and abstract sounds of the track. Repeatedly asking herself “am I dreaming?” in the song’s lyrics, the words are about trying to convey not having full control of a situation you’re in. Knowing what you want to do, but feeling like you’re in a dream state that makes you unable to act on it.
“Dreaming” is part of Rootkit’s upcoming debut album, set for a release on bitbird later in 2020.
