For early Illenium fans, the Ashes to Ashes mix series was something everyone could get lost in. With the last installment arriving back in 2017, Illenium has since skyrocketed his career to headliner status as he reached many new milestones along the way. During this time, his third studio album tour for Ascend sold out Red Rocks and Madison Square Garden. Then Illenium sent out one simple tweet that went viral with overwhelming positive support: “Ashes to Ashes 4?” That was back in May and now the majestic fourth installment has arrived exclusively on Apple Music, although insiders have said the mix will arrive on other digital outlets in time.
In Ashes to Ashes 004, Illenium runs through 20 selections over an hour-long listening journey that ascends gradually into purely bliss. Throughout, Illenium spotlights artists who have remixed some of his biggest tracks: including Nurko‘s remix of “Take You Down” and Just A Gent‘s remix of “Fortress,” which both arrived on the Ascend remix package back in May, a Blanke remix of “Gorgeous,” which was his own original collaboration with Illenium, and a Tsuruda remix of “Baba Yaga/Fortress.” Also appearing in the mix are a few uplifting Illenium mixed tracks from Trivecta, i_o, and Drezo.
Illenium also mixes in “Liberation” over his high-powered collaboration with Said The Sky, Seven Lions, and HALIENE, “Rush Over Me,” his latest solo release, “Nightlight,” and a standout mashup of The Glitch Mob’s “Bad Wings” and La Roux’s “In For The Kill.” More noteworthy inclusions on the mix are two Illenium live tour edits, “Good Things Fall Apart vs. Sad Songs” and “Gorgeous vs. All Together,” which arrived on his Ascend live edits short player issued earlier this year.
Once the dust has settled on this sublime fourth installment, one thing becomes crystal clear: This mix will captivate both the early Illenials as well as the newer ones he’s picked up down the line.
